This influencer encourages body positivity through her music festival fashion
The body positivity movement has steadily been gaining recognition, and women are starting to embrace their individuality like never before. As a person living with a chronic illness, I often feel as though I don’t fit in, especially when it comes to fashion. Busy events like music festivals can seem overwhelming, and summer fashion can feel inaccessible — from a look not being comfortable enough, to an outfit revealing too much. However, that’s about to change.
In a new series, the Jil Dever blog will speak to body-positive pioneers who are changing the game when it comes to dressing. From hints and tips about finding your inner confidence to dressing for absolutely any occasion, these influencers are unafraid to experiment with style, and they hope that they can convince you to do the same.
Sophie E. Turner (@sophieeturner), a plus-size model and influencer, didn’t always have the confidence she does now. In fact, she tells Jil Dever that she was routinely advised to hide her figure, or try to look thinner. She reveals, “For me, I was always told to wear black as it would make me appear slimmer. But I never felt good in black as I love to wear colors.”
However, Turner has stopped listening to advice that compromises her own personal style, or tries to hide her curves. She explains, “My advice is don’t hide away. Embrace your body with colours and don’t be afraid to take up space and be proud of who you are.”
In fact, Turner is now an Ambassador for a size-inclusive brand, and her Instagram is encouraging for anyone that doesn’t fit a generic mould. Sometimes all you need to make a statement is a pop of color — like the vibrant shades, and diverse animal prints, of Jil Dever’s Lovejoy scarves.
The model started embracing body positivity, “Around four years ago when I discovered the plus-size community on Instagram.” Rather than feeling like she should change her body to look like anyone else, Turner “learned to accept” her body, and started to practice self-care by not being so hard on herself.
She explains, “It made me realize that I can embrace my body, and left me wondering — why should we cover up? Moving forward I would love to see more people accepting themselves, no matter what size. We all need to be a bit more kinder to people and understand that bigger bodies aren’t due to unhealthy eating.”
Turner also knows that dressing for summer events can be challenging, especially if a person’s confidence has been knocked. But she recommends finding the perfect accessories to carry you through festival season, and at the top of her list is a fanny pack. She says, “They’re perfect for music festivals to keep your money and phone safe. It’s easy to get caught up in it all and forget where things are.”
And when you’re not sure which outfit to pick, Turner advises to, “Wear something that you feel comfortable and confident in, and dress it up with some jewelry and shoes. That way you still feel good about yourself, but the accessories can make it look like a different yet fun look!”
But regardless of the event, Turner is here to remind her followers that bodies are beautiful, and sizeism is always unacceptable. In an important Instagram post, Turner shared before and after pictures, showing the changes her body had undergone in the course of four years. She wrote, “I'm happy that there are models who are curvy and plus-size changing the world and the perception of the younger generations.” So whether you’re at Governor’s Ball or simply dancing at a backyard BBQ, this summer — and any summer for that matter — is the season to dress the way you want!
